Anniversary Weekend

Sorry we haven't blogged in a while. Setting up the new house has been crazy, stressful, and above all, exciting. Things a really coming together and we are looking forward to doing some entertaining this spring. We are about 90% unpacked, so we are going to have to get to work to be ready for crawfish boil on the 26th.

This weekend, we took a break from unpacking to celebrate our one-year anniversary. (No, we can't believe it's been a whole year either. Friday night we chilled at the house, planned for the weekend, and watched a very random movie called Bandits. The movie was so-so, but Terry made some incredible shrimp pasta and it was nice to have a quiet night at home.

Saturday we piled into prepping the yard for the upcoming festivities. We really hadn't messed with the yard until now, so it was a lot of work. I think the rearranging and little additions we made are going to look terrific though. It's definitely nice to have some established beds and a sprinkler system. We got cleaned up for dinner and met the Moores at Cafe Blue on Lake Travis. It was a beautiful cool night and the sunset was gorgeous, but I think I would prefer the view (and the drive) in the daytime for brunch. We had festive cocktails, some wonderful calamari, and a nice meal.

After a nice brunch at home on Sunday morning, we hopped on the toll road and headed for San Gabriel Park in Georgetown to spend our anniversary at the Hill Country Wine and Food Festival Sunday Fair. It is a huge outdoor festival where you can sip and sample your way through vendor tents filled with Texas and guest wineries, artisanal food vendors and Texas restaurants. Live cooking demonstrations featuring renowned chefs, shade-tree discussions on the state of wine and spirits in Texas and beyond and live music. There were so many wonderful vendors and we had an awesome time. We went several years ago and just hadn't had time to go back until now. Here's a run down of some of the highlights: Wine:
  • Frei Brothers, awesome chardonnay and shiraz
  • MacMurray Ranch, love their Pinot Noir
  • Texas Hills, our wedding wine :)
  • Gruet Winery had a terrific rose and brut, from Albuquerque, NM, of all places
  • Wilson Creek Vineyards from Temecula, CA, had an intriguing almond champagne that we both really enjoyed
  • Treana was out of their higher end wines by the time we made our way over to them, but we always enjoy their Liberty School cab and shiraz
Beer: Spirits: There were some new Austin-based distilleries at the festival the we really enjoyed.
  • Savvy Vodka is the new project of Chad Auler, son of the Fall Creek Vineyard folks. It was a very, smooth, sip-able vodka.
  • We also loved the mojitos served up by the folks from Treaty Oak Rum. Terry is already talking about planting additional mint at the house so we can enjoy some this summer.
Food: Ribs from Salt Lick were awesome as usual, and I was lucky enough to not have to wait in line. Texas Beef Council served up some great tender little kabobs with a creamy garlic sauce. We didn't sample too many sweets because we didn't want the lines to cut into our drinking time, but the English toffee we sampled from Austin Toffee Company was lovely. The absolute best thing we ate all day was the white wings from Las Casas Restaurant & Patio in Temple. They are juicy chicken breast chunks filled with jack cheese and jalapenos then wrapped in bacon and they are AMAZING.
